Merlin Entertainments Group uses Scanmarket to make improvements to its procurement processes that defy imagination in an organization that defies imagination for a living.

Merlin Entertainments Group, a 1.5Bn GBP entertainment giant with 127 attractions and 66 million guests per year, wanted to go from being a “good” procurement organization to being a “great” one. To do this, they chose Scanmarket as their provider for eRFx and eAuction solutions. Merlin already had a P2P platform in place and wished to complement it with eSourcing tools, but wanted to select best of breed rather than necessarily having a one-stop solution, as maximising sourcing results was of paramount importance to Group Procurement Director, John Butcher…”We wanted to ensure that we had the best eSourcing tool for our business. Ease of use, efficiency, speed of implementation, depth of functionality, support – these elements were absolutely crucial; the benefits of having a one-stop solution were a distant second."

As part of their selection process, Merlin went through a rigorous procedure including full competitive market review, supplier due diligence, reference inquiries, and trial events. Asked why they ultimately chose Scanmarket, Chris Gardner, Project Manager for Global Strategic eSourcing gave two key reasons: “The sheer efficiency and user-friendliness of the platform and the quality of service which perfectly fitted our business culture.

When it became time to get started, they were off-and-running quickly. Commenting on how the implementation process went, Merlin’s eSourcing Manager had this to say: “The implementation process was surprisingly easy. We were up and running our first events in a matter of weeks. The support from Scanmarket was excellent and as Procurement Professionals, they were able to understand our requirements in context, based on their past experiences which proved invaluable. They were also very proactive in supporting the change management process, in terms of helping us to win hearts and minds of our team, which was key

Scanmarket eRFx and eAuctions were initially used by the Group Procurement function but it quickly became apparent that there were opportunities throughout the organization. Moving forward, Merlin is expanding quickly. “We’re already evolving the way we use eSourcing to suit our business with great success. Building on the early events, we’re now using the modules in several countries as well as for external and internal use. The diversity of spend is ever broader and the type of events we’re running has been expanding, from the simple RFI’s through to the most complex, each time with great results. We’ll continue our journey with Scanmarket in the coming months and years, driving more and more spend through the platform and using the wide range of event functionality. We will also consider expanding the range of modules to compliment the results and efforts already achieved. In Scanmarket, we selected a partner who offers a solution that fits our business both now and, in the future, a partner that is capable of growing with us and who has invested the time to understand our business” says Gardner.

The results speak for themselves
The results are pleasing, the engagement is growing and the value we’re delivering is being seen across the business. Those benefits are not just limited to cost reduction, but to time savings, transparency, compliance and standardisation. As a result, we’ve been able to deliver the 24-month Business Case benefits target within 6 months.”

Scanmarket is honored to work with more than 300 global organizations like Merlin, supporting them daily within the full spectrum of eSourcing.

We wanted to ensure that we had the best eSourcing tool for our business. Ease of use, efficiency, speed of implementation, depth of functionality, support – these elements were absolutely crucial; the benefits of having a one-stop solution were a distant second.
